WEEKLY WRAP UP

There is only one word to describe this week... SCORCHING! I think it's been pretty hot everywhere across the US, but here in Buffalo - where people like to make fun of us for all of the snow we get - the mercury's been pushing the 90-95 degree range, and the heat index has been over 100. That's not cool. I've luckily stayed cool in my glorious air conditioning, and have been getting some good reading done!

This week was also the first meeting of the YA Book Club that Sara at Forever17Books set up, and Jessica from Jessabella Reads joined us too! It was lots of fun, and we discussed all topics from blogging, to ARCs, and oh yeah, the book we read! We are going to be reading Will Grayson, Will Grayson for August!

I had an emotional week though, with the passing of Talia Catellano, or TaliaJoy18 if you follow her on YouTube. She was a 13-year-old who has been fighting 2 kinds of aggressive, terminal cancer for six years. She unfortunately lost her battle on Tuesday, and it was just so sad but amazing to see how many fans and celebrities have been affected by her passing. Just keep swimming, just keep swimming.

We also lost Cory Monteith this week.. My heart is heavy with the loss of these two talented angels. I haven't watched Glee in awhile, but I did have a definite Glee-a-thon when it became available on Netflix, and absolutely adored the show! I would say I'm a Gleek!

I also started an Instagram account for my blog! Follow me, my user name is Thelittlepinkbookboutique.

I also am getting together some giveaways, so those will be starting soon!

I hope everyone else had a great week, and here's to an even greater one next week!
Happy Reading!

My books from BEA finally got here! Since I took a train there and back, I wasn't able to bring all of my books home. My BFF, who went with me and lives on Long Island, was kind enough to give my books a happy home until she came back to Buffalo for the 4th of July. Now they are back with me and safe & sound. I'll be compiling a post just for those books shortly. Expect Giveaways too.

WEEKLY WRAP-UP: First off, I must congratulate JILL who won the Freedom to Read Giveaway from last week! Congrats to Jill, and I hope you love your new book!

It was a good reading week for me. On Wednesday July 17th the book club that Sara from Forever17 Books started up is meeting, and our first book that we will discuss is Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes. I power read that book this week! I will posting a review up after the book club meeting. If you've read it, leave me comments to let me know if you liked it or not, and any of your favorite scenes and characters.

The family that we had in from out of town that I mentioned in last week's Sunday Journal left on Thursday, which is always sad since it was my best friend/future-sis-in-law, future-bro-in-law, and my adorably funny one-year-old niece/Goddaughter. But now I have time to read again, and I'm hoping to finally finish Icons by Margaret Stohl. I'm shocked it's taken me this long to read it, especially since it isn't a huge book by any means!

I've also been doing more thinking about starting a vlog series on my YouTube channel. I've come up with a sassy name, well I think it's sassy anyway! And I'm hoping to start filming my first episode soon, to see if I think it's going to work. I will need help from you guys though! If you have any questions for me, either as a blogger or just in general, or any type of bookish ideas for vlogs please let me know either comment below, tweet me @lalalaura725 with #vlogQs, email me, or hit me up on Facebook or Formspring and ask me anything. I have a few ideas but will need more, and would love for it to be interactive.

Other than that, we have a really hot week ahead of us here in my little corner of Western NY. I'll be glad to spend that time reading and keeping cool! Hope everyone enjoys their week!

Happy Reading,

I ended up going into a part of the city this weekend where my favorite used book store, Rust Belt Books, is located. I picked up 2 books, plus received 1 ARC to share with you!

PURCHASED
Android Karenina by Leo Tolstoy & Ben H. Winter

RECEIVED FROM PUBLISHER
The Fury [The Fury #1] by Alexander Gordon Smith

I also picked up this makeup kit from Ulta that was put out by Nyx cosmetics in anticipation of the release of The Mortal Instruments movie. You can check it out in more detail HERE. I haven't played around with it too much yet, but I am planning on trying out the two looks that they give you instructions for. I am considering doing some type of post where I do makeup looks inspired by book covers, or movies. I'm still playing around with the idea and how I would do it (photos versus videos etc) but if you think that would be cool, let me know in the comments.

WEEKLY WRAP-UP
I spent a good part of this week sick with something eerily close to the flu, and got behind in my reading. This weekend was a busy one, too so I really have to buckle down, since between the book club book, the read along book, and then my review book... I've got a lot to read! We had nice weather this weekend, so I was able to spend some time with friends and boyfriend and I also took his parents out for their anniversary, which was really nice! We tried a new restaurant that we found, and luckily for us they had vegan options so we were happy about that. This upcoming week we have a 4th of July BBQ with boyfriend's side of the family (his sister, who happens to be my BFF will be up visiting from Long Island with her hubby and my beautiful niece/goddaughter who just turned 1 in February!) and then Saturday is a Girl's Day at a local spa, which I CANNOT WAIT FOR! What are you up to this week, and what are your plans for the 4th? Any traditions in your family that you do every year? We go up to the University at Buffalo (aka UB for the locals!) to watch fireworks - best display in town!

UP ON THE BLOG THIS WEEK
MONDAY - I gave 3-Stars to Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood in my review of this historical-paranormal novel about witches.
TUESDAY - I focused on mermaid themed covers on I Love Your Cover.
WEDNESDAY - Save the Date {18} featured Still Star-Crossed by Melinda Taub
THURSDAY. FRIDAY. and SATURDAY I didn't get anything up because I was feeling so yucky.

Happy reading!

Glitch
By: Heather Anastasiu
Series: Glitch #1
What the Back of the Book Says: In the Community, there is no more pain or war. Implanted computer chips have wiped humanity clean of destructive emotions, and thoughts are replaced by a feed from the Link network.

When Zoe starts to malfunction (or “glitch”), she suddenly begins having her own thoughts, feelings, and identity. Any anomalies must be immediately reported and repaired, but Zoe has a secret so dark it will mean certain deactivation if she is caught: her glitches have given her uncontrollable telekinetic powers.

As Zoe struggles to control her abilities and stay hidden, she meets other glitchers including Max, who can disguise his appearance, and Adrien, who has visions of the future. Both boys introduce Zoe to feelings that are entirely new. Together, this growing band of glitchers must find a way to free themselves from the controlling hands of the Community before they’re caught and deactivated, or worse.

In this action-packed debut, Glitch begins an exciting new young adult trilogy.

Carnival of Souls
By: Melissa Marr
Series: Standalone
What the Back of the Book Says: In a city of daimons, rigid class lines separate the powerful from the power-hungry. And at the heart of The City is the Carnival of Souls, where both murder and pleasure are offered up for sale. Once in a generation, the carnival hosts a deadly competition that allows every daimon a chance to join the ruling elite. Without the competition, Aya and Kaleb would both face bleak futures--if for different reasons. For each of them, fighting to the death is the only way to try to live.

All Mallory knows of The City is that her father--and every other witch there--fled it for a life in exile in the human world. Instead of a typical teenage life full of friends and maybe even a little romance, Mallory scans quiet streets for threats, hides herself away, and trains to be lethal. She knows it's only a matter of time until a daimon finds her and her father, so she readies herself for the inevitable. While Mallory possesses little knowledge of The City, every inhabitant of The City knows of her. There are plans for Mallory, and soon she, too, will be drawn into the decadence and danger that is the Carnival of Souls.

From Melissa Marr, bestselling author of the Wicked Lovely series and "Graveminder," comes a brand-new tale of lush secrets, dark love, and the struggle to forge one's own destiny.

Alice in Zombieland
By: Gena Showalter
Series: White Rabbit Chronicles #1
What the Back of the Book Says:

 She won’t rest until she’s sent every walking corpse back to its grave. Forever.

Had anyone told Alice Bell that her entire life would change course between one heartbeat and the next, she would have laughed. From blissful to tragic, innocent to ruined? Please. But that’s all it took. One heartbeat. A blink, a breath, a second, and everything she knew and loved was gone.

Her father was right. The monsters are real….

To avenge her family, Ali must learn to fight the undead. To survive, she must learn to trust the baddest of the bad boys, Cole Holland. But Cole has secrets of his own, and if Ali isn’t careful, those secrets might just prove to be more dangerous than the zombies….

I wish I could go back and do a thousand things differently.
I'd tell my sister no.
I'd never beg my mother to talk to my dad.
I'd zip my lips and swallow those hateful words.
Or, barring all of that, I'd hug my sister, my mom and my dad one last time.
I'd tell them I love them.
I wish... Yeah, I wish.

What new books did you get this week?

Weekly Wrapup {5}

I think, thankfully, that my YA reading slump is coming to an end. Thank goodness! It has been three months now that I've had my computer (if you follow my blog then you know it was attacked by a vicious virus that has rendered it inoperable) so I'm still working off my cell phone, and on the weekends when my boyfriend brings his work laptop home. It's really hard, because I feel super pressured to crank out as many posts as I can schedule, and I feel like it's a disservice to both myself and my readers. We both deserve my best! So you might notice me posting less, but we are actively working to fix our computer and once we do, then I'll be back at 100% - I can't wait!

Other than that, I did try out a new layout this past week. I really liked it, but it didn't give me any options to really customize it as I'd prefer. So until I can do that, I've switched to a simpler, easier, less cluttered looking layout. If you look to the right, you'll see a slim, black bar. When you hover the mouse there it'll extend a sidebar where you can find all of the blog goodies - my followers, archives, labels, contact info for Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook, etc.

I did want to take a second to mention a cool App I found on my Android phone. I cannot confirm if it's available on Iphone, but Android definitely has it. It's called Google Currents. This is the easiest way for me to keep up with all of the blogs that I follow. It's like Google Reader for your phone. I highly recommend this App if you need a way to have all of your blogs at your fingertips with just the touch of a button!

Other than that, not much bookish has been going on in my little bloggy corner of the world. How about you?

What the Back of the Book Says: A summer of firsts

Sixteen-year-old Eliza Miller has never made a phone call, never tried on a pair of jeans, never sat in a darkened theater waiting for a movie to start. She's never even talked to someone her age who isn't Amish, like her.
A summer of good-byes
When she leaves her close-knit family to spend the summer as a nanny in suburban Chicago, a part of her can't wait to leave behind everything she knows. She can't imagine the secrets she will uncover, the friends she will make, the surprises and temptations of a way of life so different from her own.
A summer of impossible choice
Every minute Eliza spends with her new friend Josh feels as good as listening to music for the first time, and she wonders whether there might be a place for her in his world. But as summer wanes, she misses the people she has left behind, and the plain life she once took for granted. Eliza will have to decide for herself where she belongs. Whichever choice she makes, she knows she will lose someone she loves.

My Thoughts: I've always been intrigued by the Amish. There are some that live about an hour from where I live, and whenever I see the yellow street signs with the horse and buggy, I hope to see them, just to peek into their way of living even if just for a brief moment. The strength and tenacity that they possess to continue to live as simply as they do, when our world is so full of technological advances and temptations. It's incredible to me. And so, when I picked up this book at the library I was filled with excitement! I thought the premise sounded so cool! A 16-year-old Amish girl moving to Chicago to be a nanny for her Rumspringa? Awesome!

I unfortunately did not finish the book. I wouldn't say that there was anything in particular that I didn't like that made me set it aside. I think it was a culmination of a few things. First being that the book seemed much more middle grade than young adult. Understandably, the main character is very different from everyday sixteen-year-old "English" girls, but it felt as though she were more about the age of 12 than 16. I found myself lacking enthusiasm and interest in Eliza's story.

The writing was also very simple. It is not necessarily a bad thing, but I feel that it made the characters fall flat. I wasn't able to really make a good connection with any of them. I think that this would be a good book for a younger pre-teen, teen girl who is curious about how the Amish live, but I don't think that it has enough to keep an older reader engaged.

Let me know your thoughts!

Happy Reading!

On My Bookshelf #2

New Books for the Week of: August 13th 2012

Purchased

E-Books

I was so happy to find a new update waiting on my Kobo (once I finally got the wi-fi working... urgh) and now it's more user-friendly than ever! You can create shelves, which believe me, I did immediately! So new setup called for new books! Here's what I got:

Sometimes It Happens by Lauren Barnholdt
On the last day of her junior year, Hannah's boyfriend Ryan dumped her. Facing a summer of loneliness, Hannah turns to her best friend Ava for comfort. Ava does what BFFs do: she stays by Hannah's side...until it's time for Ava to head up to Maine for the summer. Also left behind is Ava's boyfriend, Noah, who's such a great guy he gets Hannah a job at the diner he waits tables at. Slowly, Hannah comes out of her funk thanks to Noah's good conversation and their fun times at the diner. But things get complicated when their friendship turns into attraction--and one night, into a passionate kiss. The novel opens on the first day of senior year; the day Hannah is going to see Ava, Ryan, and Noah all in one place. Over the course of the day secrets and betrayals are revealed, and alliances are broken and reformed. In the end, everyone is paired up once again, but not the way you might think... {ADD TO GOODREADS}

Enclave - Razorland #1 by Ann Aguirre
WELCOME TO THE APOCALYPSE

In Deuce’s world, people earn the right to a name only if they survive their first fifteen years. By that point, each unnamed ‘brat’ has trained into one of three groups–Breeders, Builders, or Hunters, identifiable by the number of scars they bear on their arms. Deuce has wanted to be a Huntress for as long as she can remember.

As a Huntress, her purpose is clear—to brave the dangerous tunnels outside the enclave and bring back meat to feed the group while evading ferocious monsters known as Freaks. She’s worked toward this goal her whole life, and nothing’s going to stop her, not even a beautiful, brooding Hunter named Fade. When the mysterious boy becomes her partner, Deuce’s troubles are just beginning.

Down below, deviation from the rules is punished swiftly and harshly, and Fade doesn’t like following orders. At first Deuce thinks he’s crazy, but as death stalks their sanctuary, and it becomes clear the elders don’t always know best, Deuce wonders if Fade might be telling the truth. Her partner confuses her; she’s never known a boy like him before, as prone to touching her gently as using his knives with feral grace.

As Deuce’s perception shifts, so does the balance in the constant battle for survival. The mindless Freaks, once considered a threat only due to their sheer numbers, show signs of cunning and strategy… but the elders refuse to heed any warnings. Despite imminent disaster, the enclave puts their faith in strictures and sacrifice instead. No matter how she tries, Deuce cannot stem the dark tide that carries her far from the only world she’s ever known. {ADD TO GOODREADS}

All These Things I've Done - Birthright #1 by Gabrielle Zevin
In 2083, chocolate and coffee are illegal, paper is hard to find, water is carefully rationed, and New York City is rife with crime and poverty. And yet, for Anya Balanchine, the sixteen-year-old daughter of the city's most notorious (and dead) crime boss, life is fairly routine. It consists of going to school, taking care of her siblings and her dying grandmother, trying to avoid falling in love with the new assistant D.A.'s son, and avoiding her loser ex-boyfriend. That is until her ex is accidently poisoned by the chocolate her family manufactures and the police think she's to blame. Suddenly, Anya finds herself thrust unwillingly into the spotlight--at school, in the news, and most importantly, within her mafia family.
Engrossing and suspenseful, All These Things I've Done is an utterly unique, unputdownable read that blends both the familiar and the fantastic. {ADD TO GOODREADS}

Legacies - Shadow Grail #1 by Mercedes Lackey, Rosemary Edghill
Spirit White has survived from a deadly car crash that has killed her mother and father and her sister. She has been discovered by a school with special talents, called magic. A couple of months after staying, people begin to disappear, some vanish to be never seen again, so Spirit and her new friends begin the investigation. But will they find out the truth of what is going on? Or will Spirit and her friends suffer a terrible fate from which they don't know about yet? {ADD TO GOODREADS}

Can true love be forgotten?

As the only scion who can descend into the Underworld, Helen Hamilton has been given a nearly impossible task. By night she wanders through Hades, trying to stop the endless cycle of revenge that has cursed her family. By day she struggles to overcome the fatigue that is rapidly eroding her sanity. Wake - Watersong #1 by Amanda Hocking
Fall under the spell of Wake—the first book in an achingly beautiful new series by celebrated author Amanda Hocking—and lose yourself to the Watersong.

Gorgeous. Fearless. Dangerous. They're the kind of girls you envy; the kind of girls you want to hate. Strangers in town for the summer, Penn, Lexi and Thea have caught everyone's attention—but it’s Gemma who’s attracted theirs. She’s the one they’ve chosen to be part of their group.

Gemma seems to have it all—she’s carefree, pretty, and falling in love with Alex, the boy next door. He’s always been just a friend, but this summer they’ve taken their relationship to the next level, and now there’s no going back. Then one night, Gemma’s ordinary life changes forever. She’s taking a late night swim under the stars when she finds Penn, Lexi and Thea partying on the cove. They invite her to join them, and the next morning she wakes up on the beach feeling groggy and sick, knowing something is different.

Suddenly Gemma is stronger, faster, and more beautiful than ever. But her new powers come with a terrifying price. And as she uncovers the truth, she’s is forced to choose between staying with those she loves—or entering a new world brimming with dark hungers and unimaginable secrets.
